Why one-to-ones in an empty field haven't fixed your dog.

TRADITIONAL REACTIVITY TRAINING

  • One trainer, one dog, one session a week with no end in sight. Your dog never actually sees another dog up close in training.

  • Slow distance work in quiet, sterile environments for months, that eventually build up to the dog walking past triggers at 30 metres.

  • High-value treats to engage and disengage. Works until the trigger is closer than the treat is interesting, which is most of the time.

  • Avoidance dressed up as training: cross the road, change direction, manage the environment. Forever.

  • When you get nowhere, you get referred out - to a behaviourist, to the vet for medication, or sometimes to a conversation you didn't want to have.

THE YCA BOOTCAMP METHOD

YORKSHIRE CANINE ACADEMY

  • Eight reactive dogs in the same, controlled space from day one. Your dog learns around their actual trigger, not a stand-in.

  • Five days, six hours a day. By Friday your dog has done more trigger encounters than they'd do in a year of weekly sessions.

  • Real-world environments - pubs, parks, narrow footpaths, off-lead dogs we don't know running up to us. The places you actually want to take your dog.

  • We coach the owner properly. You leave knowing how to handle it yourself so you're not dependent on us forever.

  • Money-back guarantee. If you follow the steps but don't get the results, we refund you in full. We stand behind what we do.

I recommend the YCA to everyone I know. Atlas is almost 2 and struggles with dog reactivity. Before we started training with the YCA his recall sucked, I used to dread walks and I constantly felt like I was failing to give him the life he deserved. Atlas initially did 3 days training at the YCA & we went for 2 in person 1-1s where he leant the basics of loose lead walking, and we left with a clear plan & training exercises to do & had lots of WhatsApp support. We then did their online training with instinct programme and the e-collar course. I used to be very uneducated about e-collars and would never have even considered using one previously. However, after learning about how it is introduced & used in the course, I can honestly say that any misconceptions I had about them only being used in a “cruel” way went out the window. The course has been life changing for us and Atlas has been off lead on walks around the countryside, past dogs, cows, sheep and people for the first time this week since he was 5/6 months old. Seeing him run around off lead, genuinely loving life, is the most amazing thing. I can also now fully enjoy our walks as I’m not constantly stressing about not having control over him and him not having reliable recall. In my opinion, training with the YCA is the best decision I ever made for me & Atlas ❤️ Thank you!

The YCA boot camp for reactive dogs was a great experience. We made a lot of progress in a short space of time with our 9 year old Australian shepherd dog, Skye. Her age made no difference to learning the new behaviours. The techniques are well taught and thoroughly explained. The training was varied and well structured. This allowed us to progress and build our confidence throughout the week. The consultation, booking process and pre-course training was easy and well delivered. The team are really friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.Thank you YCA for helping us to give Skye a more relaxed quality of life.

Simply outstanding results!Bespoke training, with no BS.It wasn't long before I realised that they utilise everything at there disposal to tailor their methods to each dog and their owners.Multiple trainers, dog handlers, and fellow owners ( and their dogs) are all utilised in fluid training exercises and even improv to get desired outcomes. I was and am still blown away with the speed and efficacy of how far we have progressed.Having a highly reactive pet is soul destroying. I feel like a heavy weight has been lifted from me, truly. But the "Real Deal" is now my dog has begun to live a life full of fun and even more happiness. The new things he is getting to experience for the very first time each and every day is astounding.Non of this is possible without the trainers, and other staff in the background supporting both them and all the clients online and at the academy day to day.Take your first step. We did. There is no looking back is there "Dodi"?

We've just finished YCA's Training With Instinct programme and they've managed to help us with every issue we set out to address with Ted, our two year-old Malinois cross. We really cannot recommend them highly enough. The training documentation is fantastic and the accompanying video tutorials are easy to follow, the 1:1 sessions we had were transformative, and we were supported brilliantly throughout via WhatsApp and group calls. Ted arrived with us from Dog's Trust as a super-reactive whirlwind; beautiful temperament but wanting to chase everything that moved. As a result he pulled ridiculously on the lead, was far too boisterous around other dogs and had no self-control around footballs, basketballs etc...not a good look in the local park. He now walks brilliantly on a loose lead, ignoring other dogs with bad manners (we now notice how many of them there are!); he recalls superbly and is just way calmer in general thanks to the boundaries and thresholds YCA have helped us put in place. One particular moment to call out happened about 6 weeks in. We were really struggling with a particular step in the course and feeling quite dejected, which we conveyed via our private WhatsApp group: Jacob, Kirky and Elisha jumped straight on it with a plan, but more importantly, encouragement. A week later we were in a 1:1 with Kirky, and turning a corner. We were told right at the start to expect challenges and then a collective lightbulb moment when we and Ted would click, as all the foundations began working together, and that's exactly what happened. We're looking forward to staying in touch as 'graduates', as more than anything else YCA are just good people to hang around and natter about dogs with. Thanks everyone.

I’m so grateful to YCA they truly changed everything for us.Before going to YCA, Finn was reactive to dogs, people and tried to chin anything that moved. He pulled like a train when on lead and had a recall when nothing was at stake. We needed help.I signed up to the Focus in Four course and saw improvements but I wanted more freedom for Finn to be a dog. So I signed up to the Training with Instincts course, and started it. It took awhile to work through Finn's issues but Elisha, Kirky and the team at YCA walked me through every step.We started with simple play and moved to addressing his reactivity, and then his recall and using an e-collar. The videos and resources they provided me with were so helpful, almost holding my hand and walking me through the processes, how and why they work.I absolutely recommend going to YCA to get help for your doggy troubles.Finn is now living his best life, on and off lead, I can take pretty much anywhere without worrying. And is so much happier now being able to live his best life.

I booked into YCA's training boot camp to improve my pointer's skills as he had recently started having issues with larger dogs, and his e-collar was damaged while chasing a deer. I left absolutely blown away by the transformations in Allie and the other 13 dogs, each with their own unique personality and playful spirit. The five days I spent with this amazing group gave me the tools, knowledge, and confidence needed to move forward with Allie in a way where I feel we're speaking the same language. It was a pleasure working with trainers who have this passion, energy, and genuine care for their work, support, and guidance.

One of the highlights of the week was the additional free challenges, including the "volcanic heat wave" level and the "massive thunderstorm" level. Everything was handled with professionalism and calm, with the dogs' focus at the forefront. There were also many side tasks to complete, which was a wonderful addition. Everything is tailored to suit your dog's level of craziness, fitting their needs and behaviors (and yours too). Special thanks to Alex, Mel, Simo, Owen, Toni, and Elisha who supported us throughout the intensive training period (after Kirky abandoned us). The YCA staff and trainers had unparalleled patience and tolerance for my many questions, interrogations, and trivial chatter. They were incredibly kind to my wet German Short-Haired Pointer and his different needs. Absolute legends. They would even lend you their wet jacket if you found yourself forced to wear a white shirt in heavy rain. Exceptional service in every sense of the word. Highly recommend (12.5/10).

Is this right for you?

The bootcamp works for most reactive dogs. Here's who gets the most out of it.

  • Your dog is reactive on or off lead - to dogs, people, cars, bikes, prams, or all of the above.

  • You've already tried at least one trainer and it hasn't held, or it's gone backwards.

  • You can take a week off (Mon–Fri) and get to Wadhurst, East Sussex. We've got clients who travel from across the South East and beyond.

  • You're prepared to be coached. The bootcamp is focused on training YOU just as much as your dog.

  • You want a dog that can come everywhere with you - cafés, hikes, the school run - not a dog you walk at 5am in a muzzle.

What you won't be doing.

  • Spending endless 1-to-1 sessions at '30 metres from a stooge dog' with little progress.
  • Rummaging for premium steak or other high-value treats every time another dog turns the corner.
  • Booking yet another behaviourist who claims to specialise in your specific breed.
  • Medicating a dog that doesn't actually need medication.
  • Leaving the dog in someone else's hands for weeks and hoping they've fixed the issues, without actually training you in how they've done it.
  • Paying for any further training and getting zero results.

Most reactivity methods rely on managing the environment forever or progressing so slowly that life moves on without you. We don't do either. By Friday you're not managing - you're walking past the thing your dog used to lose its mind over, and your dog isn't reacting.

Verified reviews from real dog owners on Google

Questions we get every week.

My dog has bitten before. Can they still do the bootcamp?

Yes, in most cases. We've worked with dogs with bite histories - including dogs that have bitten their owners. We'll ask for the full history on the call so we can be honest about whether we're the right fit. We don't take every dog, but we don't rule out bite history by default.

My dog is old / a rescue / a 'difficult' breed. Does that matter?

Age, breed, and background don't disqualify a dog. We've worked with dogs in their teens, dogs that came from fighting backgrounds, and breeds that get turned away by other trainers. What matters is the dog's current behaviour and your commitment as an owner.

How does the guarantee work?

We back our results with a written guarantee. If the results don't hold within six months and you've followed the plan we gave you, we refund. Ask us for the full terms on the call.

Can I travel from further away / outside the local area?

Yes. We have owners travel from all across the UK to attend. We can recommend dog-friendly accommodation near our Wadhurst facility - most people stay for the week and treat it as a dedicated working trip.

Do I have to be there all day, every day?

Yes. The bootcamp trains you as much as it trains your dog. You need to be there to learn what we're doing and why, so you can replicate it at home. If you can't commit to the full week, the bootcamp won't work as intended.

What if my dog is the worst one there?

Every dog in the bootcamp is reactive. Some are worse than others. We've had dogs that came in screaming at everything within 50 feet and left walking past dogs off-lead. We manage the group carefully - no dog is thrown in the deep end unsupported. If we've accepted your dog, we're confident we can work with them.
